Writing and creating new worlds: what’s stopping you?

Writing has been my lifelong passion, but it does not need to be yours for you to take up this creative pursuit. My journey has been filled with milestones from getting my short story and academic work to be published by a mainstream publisher to self-publishing my own fiction. Whether it’s poetry, academic articles, or imaginative fiction, the act of writing has been a transformative experience for me. Here’s why you should start writing and creating your own worlds too.

Discover Your Voice

Every story I create, creates me. I write to create myself. (Octavia Butler)

Everyone has a unique story to tell. Writing allows you to discover your voice and share your perspective with the world. Don’t worry about perfecting it from the start. The key is to begin and let your voice evolve.

Create New Worlds

Writing fiction is an incredible way to explore new worlds. You have the freedom to create characters, settings, and plots that reflect your imagination. These worlds can provide escape, reflection, or adventure for your readers—and for you as well. You can find ways to represent yourself in your work especially if you are part of marginalised communities who have been denied access to mainstream publishing routes for a very long time or have had your voice written by those who have not experienced your experiences.

Make an Impact

Writing can influence and inspire others. Whether through a heartfelt poem, a thought-provoking story, or an insightful article, your words have the power to impact lives. Share your experiences, your dreams, and your insights—someone out there needs to hear them.

Share Diverse Stories

The world needs diverse stories from diverse voices. Your unique experiences and perspectives can fill gaps in literature and bring new insights to readers who may have never encountered stories like yours. Diverse voices enrich the literary landscape, fostering greater understanding and empathy.

Personal Growth

Writing is also a journey of self-discovery. It challenges you to think deeply, to confront your thoughts and feelings, and to grow as a person. The process of crafting a story, poem, or article can be incredibly rewarding and enlightening.

Join a Community

The writing community can be vibrant and supportive. By sharing your work, you become part of a larger conversation. Engage with other writers, receive feedback, and gain new perspectives. This interaction can fuel your creativity and keep you motivated. If you can’t find a community that welcomes and supports you or reflect you, start your own.

Steps to Get Started

  1. Start Small: Begin with short stories, poems, or journal entries. These small steps build your confidence.
  2. Set Goals: Whether it’s a word count or a time commitment, set achievable goals to keep you on track. Writing is based on habit – fit in 30 minutes a day and watch your writing develop.
  3. Find Your Space: Create a writing environment that inspires you. It could be a cozy corner at home or a bustling café.
  4. Read Widely: Exposure to different genres and styles will expand your horizons and inspire your own writing.
  5. Seek Feedback: Don’t be afraid to share your work with others. Constructive criticism is invaluable.

I invite you to embark on your own writing journey. Pick up a pen, open a new document, and start creating. Share your stories, build your worlds, and let your imagination soar. Your words have the power to make a difference, and not just to you—begin today!

Remember, the journey of a thousand words begins with a single sentence. Write on!
