Write like a cat! Write stories that you crave

Hello, fellow scribblers and story weavers!

It’s been a while since Bailey and I updated our blog—she’s been sunbathing like a diva, and I’ve been tangled in the twists of the next Emerson Chopra mystery, Murder in the Village. It’s been a long haul through the winter and spring months, with plenty of rewrites, cups of tea, and moments of dramatic sighing.

Today, as I sit down to write, looking out into the garden, Bailey perches on the keyboard, offering her unique brand of editorial oversight—mostly in the form of paw prints and the occasional accidental deletion. But her presence reminds me of a crucial writing principle: write what you want to read. That’s what keeps me going. Not writing what I think might sell, or what might get me noticed by agents or publishers—but what I would love to curl up and read on a rainy afternoon.

Bailey doesn’t chase every moth or insect that comes her way; she selects the ones that truly captivate her. Similarly, when it comes to writing, why not pursue the stories that genuinely excite you? If you’re passionate about time-travelling feline detectives or non-binary culinary adventures in space, dive into those narratives with all your energy and unapologetic joy. Whether it’s gothic snail romance or post-apocalyptic knitting cults—if it delights you, it’s worth writing.

Remember, your enthusiasm will shine through your words, making your stories more engaging for readers. And if you ever feel stuck, take a cue from Bailey: stretch, yawn, and then pounce back into the fray with renewed vigour.

So let’s embrace our inner felines—curious, bold, and gloriously disobedient to expectations. And if you need a sign to start that weird, wonderful story living in your head, consider this it. Bailey approves. Happy writing!

Love
